The conversations about 2020 are old. I’ve added #2020sucks to many texts and emails. I’ve complained along with everyone else and it’s just old. And it doesn’t help to hear how 2020 is in fact not quite the worst year in history.
I want to point out some positive things about this year, not about anything specific, just in general. Hold on, there’s something out there.
The Good Stuff
The predictions of what will happen in the future have always been intriguing to me. Nostradamus had many predictions about this year. Global warming, pollution, species extinction … none of these are new to this year. I have seen some incredible photos of mountains being seen from a distance for the first time ever because the air is clear of (so much) pollution.
We are off the roads, and the slow down in traffic has also allowed those who work on the roads to do so at a faster pace, which surely equates to budget savings. It also saves us a lot of time and money from not having to commute to work every day. The positive impacts of this alone has initiated permanent changes for some companies’ work from home policies.
He also predicted we would be spending too much time on our cell phones, the internet, and television. THAT’S laugh out loud funny. Everyone is learning how to use technologies to stay connected with friends, family, and coworkers. Students are getting tablets so they can learn remotely. This is only going to increase our amount of time online (not necessarily a good thing).
If you are a Taurus, you should see some positive changes in yourself this year. If you are a Virgo you are going to take a big vacation, and/or take some classes, and/or change your career path. If you are a Capricorn you need to stop working so hard and have some fun. And all of this is because of Uranus. I didn’t make that up.
Businesses are finding ways to reinvent themselves. Some of the large retailers have decided to stay closed on Thanksgiving to give their employees more time to spend with their families. And flextime is becoming more widespread than just technology companies.
Telemedicine has been a topic of discussion for many years. This year it became a widespread reality. I’ve not used it yet, but I have family members who have and loved it.
There is a larger appreciation for science. That can’t be a bad thing. We need as many people as possible working on science to prevent pandemics and diseases, and immunizations, etc.
While there doesn’t seem to be an agreement on how to handle the issues of racism, the topic is being discussed. Same with policing, we don’t all agree on how it’s done or how it might need to change, but we are talking about it too. Same with politics. Talking is always a good thing to promote change.
More people are paying attention to their communities and doing more business locally. As a small business owner, I certainly appreciate those efforts. Almost immediately after forced closings, there was a Facebook page created all about and for area restaurants. Who’s delivering, doing take out, where’s the best brownie or pizza or whatever. What a great way to support our local food community.
People are doing projects around the house. Either stuff they talked about previously or converting a bedroom to an office. She-sheds, he-sheds, a place for the kids to go. There’s also a lot of activity in the real estate market.
Drive-in movie theaters are coming back. Drive-in concerts are becoming a thing. How cool is THAT?
What prompted me to write this blog was thinking about how fortunate most of us are to have been able to be at home with the turmoil happening on the streets of some of our communities. As though “COVID” pushed us out of the path of a moving truck.
I think more than anything, 2020 has caused us to slow down. We have more patience with each other. We are showing compassion, as we do when something big (and specifically bad) happens.
So I’m grateful for the “reset” imposed on me by COVID. The slowdown has been good for me and those around me. Who knows how long it will last … I guess that’s up to us. I for one am going to make the effort to continue my new-and-improved habits.
