A Bad Website is Worse Than No Website

Having a bad website is worse for your business than no website at all.  This seems counter intuitive, but it is true.   Having a website allows many people an easy way to find your business online; however, with a bad website you are reaching a lot of people with the wrong message.

People see a bad website and perceive your product, service or overall business as bad.   Suddenly, you have convinced many people that you are a bad business (one to be avoided) versus just an unknown business.   Add the ease of viral communication and suddenly you are well known for all the wrong things.   Now you have to work harder to get new customers and your website is working against you.

How do you avoid this issue?  Here are some important suggestions:

  • Make sure you are ready to have a website before you launch one.   You need to be ready to invest the time and money to manage the site every day.  A website is a responsibility and requires attention like a new store would.    Talk with people who you think have good websites and learn more about what is involved.
  • Work with professionals to create and manage your website.   Having your family or a friend of a friend develop your business website will only spell disaster.   You will pay less in the long run and get better results working with professionals.
  • Align your website with your overall business plan, business goals, branding and so on.    Your website should not look or act like a separate company.  You have a good business; build your website off of that idea.
  • Be realistic about what you can do with your website.    Launching your website is not the end of the process, it is the beginning.    Understand the priorities, create a realistic budget and start your website with that plan.   A good website is an evolution.   Don’t try to build a perfect site, just a good start.
  • Listen to your customers – the people who keep you in business.    Your website is as much your customer’s tool as it is your business tool.   If your customers like it, potential customers will like it.   Getting new customers is the point.

When done well, websites can be the secret ingredient that helps your business grow fast.
